The nice and cozy climate over the previous couple of weeks has made walks by way of the orchards very pleasant and it has inspired flowering every week to 10 days sooner than in 2021.  Nonetheless, the extent of flowering this 12 months seems patchy throughout the orchards, with gentle flowering notably noticeable within the pears and early apples.

Of the varieties on my pear recording checklist, round 70% have gentle/very gentle/too few flowers to document.  Various components may very well be at play right here and it might be that these varieties cropped closely final 12 months and are in a ‘resting’ section this 12 months, though most of the pears have been affected by the late frosts in 2021 so this is probably not the case.  One other issue could also be low nutrient ranges, so we are going to give them a very good foliar feed to be on the protected facet.

The blossom in different orchards on the NFC has fared higher, with most plum and cherry varieties famous as ‘medium’ flowering.  All being effectively, a very good crop will be anticipated in each these Collections this 12 months, which will probably be very welcome after the sunshine crop they produced in 2021.
